We have a great range of seed potatoes available including organic and special varieties, in addition to the traditional first early, second early and main crop seed potatoes which we stock. FIRST EARLY POTATOES
Ready to plant from March onwards, these potatoes will be ready to harvest in around ten weeks, and are traditionally called ‘new’ potatoes. They are perfect for growing in large containers and potato grow bags due to their compact habit.
First earlies benefit from chitting approximately six weeks prior to planting out.
SECOND EARLY POTATOES
Just like first early seed potatoes, second early varieties can be planted from March onwards, but will be ready to harvest in approximately twelve to fourteen weeks after planting.
Producing small new potatoes, second early varieties can be grown in large containers and potato grow bags after chitting.
MAIN CROP
If you’re looking to grow larger potatoes, you’ll want to choose a main crop variety as these produce potatoes perfect for roasting, baking and mashing. Ready to plant from March onwards, these main crop potatoes will be ready to harvest in approximately 20 weeks.
They’ll benefit from being planted in the ground.
1) The best time to plant seed potatoes is mid-to-late March/early April, when the risk of frost has reduced.
2) Six weeks before you intend to plant out your early potatoes, move them into a light area of about 10 degrees Celsius to encourage them to sprout (also known as chitting).
3) To get your potatoes off to a great start, apply a quality fertiliser to your soil before planting.
4) Once your potato plants are in leaf, don’t over water, and continue to feed every two weeks.
